An arc of eight white stars - seven for the provinces that signed the 1811 Declaration of Independence and an eighth for Guayana, which joined in 1817 - crosses the blue band of a yellow-blue-red tricolor essentially designed by Francisco de Miranda for his 1806 expedition.
