Officially adopted on 6 July 1964. Black represents the indigenous people of the continent; red symbolises the blood of their struggle; green represents nature. The rising sun officially represents the dawn of hope and freedom for the continent of Africa. A 2010 flag replaced the rising sun with a full, centred white sun with 45 rays; on 28 May 2012 Parliament voted to revert to the independence flag.

A rising red sun over black-red-green horizontal bands, the sun representing the dawn of hope and freedom for the continent of Africa; the sun was changed to a full centred white sun with 45 rays in 2010 before Parliament reverted to the independence flag in 2012.
