Green stands for the agriculture and livestock of the country; blue represents the bounty of the sea; red stands for the bloodshed in the struggle for Eritrean independence; the 30 leaves in the wreath represent the thirty years spent in the struggle. The flag combines the basic layout and colors from the flag of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front.

A red triangle bearing a gold olive wreath and star extends from the hoist between a green upper triangle and a blue lower triangle, combining the basic layout and colours of the flag of the Eritrean People's Liberation Front.
