The current flag design was adopted 16 September 1963. Red stripes represent bravery; white stripes represent purity; the blue canton symbolises the unity of the Malaysian people; yellow [is] the royal colour of the Malay rulers; the crescent represents Islam. The 14 stripes represent the equal status in the federation of the 13 member states and the federal territories, while the 14 points of the star represent the unity among these entities.

Fourteen red-and-white stripes and a blue canton bearing a yellow crescent (for Islam) and a fourteen-point Federal Star; the 14 stripes represent the equal status of the 13 states and the federal territories, and the 14 points their unity, in the form adopted in 1963.
