Adopted in 1960 to replace the flag of the Mali Federation. Green [is] the colour of the Prophet [and] a portent of hope; yellow [is] the symbol of wealth [and] the product of work; red recalls the colour of blood [...] life and the sacrifice accepted by the nation. It kept the colours and stripes of the federation's flag, with the only change being the replacement of the kanaga with a green star.

A green-yellow-red vertical tricolor with a central green five-pointed star; on separating from the Mali Federation in 1960, Senegal kept the federation flag's colours and stripes and replaced its kanaga figure with the green star.
