Original design adopted 7 June 1995; current design (thicker ornament pattern) 10 February 2012. According to President Alexander Lukashenko, red represents freedom and the sacrifice of the nation's forefathers, while green represents life. Regarding the ornamental pattern, no official interpretation is provided; the pattern is a traditional type commonly used in Belarus.

A wide red band over a narrow green band carries a traditional red-and-white ornamental pattern (rushnik) along the hoist, for which no official interpretation is given; the current design was adopted in 1995 and redrawn in 2012.
