Adopted upon the start of self-government, May 1, 1979. The white and orange portions of the band represent, respectively, the Ratak Chain ("sunrise") and the Ralik Chain ("sunset"). The star's 24 points represent the number of electoral districts, while the four elongated points represent the principal cultural centers.

Symbolism and history(r1)

A white star with 24 points for the electoral districts, its four longer points for the principal cultural centres, sits near a diagonal orange-and-white band that widens from the hoist, on a blue field, adopted at self-government in 1979.
