What the law specifies[1]

The flag act of 10 December 1898, §1, describes the flag as a high red field bearing a dark-blue cross set within a white border, dividing the flag into four right-angled rectangles, with the breadth standing to the length as 16 to 22.

Symbolism and history

A blue Nordic cross fimbriated in white on a red field, designed in 1821 by Fredrik Meltzer, who chose the three colours of freedom seen in the French, Dutch and American flags, on the Danish cross template.
