Adopted 1969. The yellow signifies civil tradition and temporal authority as embodied in the Druk Gyalpo, the Dragon King; the orange signifies Tibetan Buddhist spiritual tradition, particularly the Drukpa Kagyu and Nyingma schools. The dragon's placement in the centre of the flag over the dividing line signifies the equal importance of both civic and monastic traditions. The jewels represent Bhutan's wealth and the security and protection of its people.

Symbolism and history(r1)

A white dragon, the Druk (Thunder Dragon) that gives Bhutan its endonym Druk Yul, straddles the line between a diagonal yellow-orange split to signify the equal importance of civic and monastic traditions, clutching jewels in its claws that represent the country's wealth and the protection of its people.
