What the law specifies[1]

Article 12 of the Constitution defines the flag as the Italian tricolour — green, white and red — in three vertical bands of equal size ("a tre bande verticali di eguali dimensioni"). It fixes the three colours and their equal vertical division; it states no aspect ratio and no colour shades.

Symbolism and history

A plain green-white-red vertical tricolor, inspired by the French tricolour and adopted by the Cispadane Republic in 1797, itself drawing on earlier Lombard Legion banners; readopted after the monarchy's abolition in 1946.
