Symbolism and history

A blue celestial globe showing 27 stars, one per state plus the federal district, positioned exactly as the sky appeared over Rio on November 15, 1889, sits on a yellow diamond over green, with the motto "Ordem e Progresso" (Order and Progress) across the globe's band. The flag law fixes the design to the decree of 19 November 1889; the star count has been amended since, most recently in 1992 when Tocantins was added.
