Current design adopted 17 August 1871 (modified 1968-1997, 1997-present). Sky blue [is] strength, justice, truth and loyalty; white [is] purity, integrity, firmness and light. The coat of arms shows a resplendent quetzal symbolizing liberty, a parchment scroll dated 15 September 1821, crossed Remington rifles (defense capability), and crossed swords (honor).

A resplendent quetzal, symbolising liberty, perches above a scroll dated 15 September 1821, crossed Remington rifles for the country's defense and crossed swords for honor, at the center of a blue-white-blue tricolor.
