The current flag was adopted on 25 September 1992. According to the Cape Verdean government: blue represents the sky and sea; white and red represent the Cape Verdeans' desire for peace and efforts in nation-building, respectively; and the ten stars represent the archipelago's ten islands, arranged in a circle to symbolise unity. The designer's stated reason was to create a flag that would not be mistaken for that of another nation, as the existing flag had been for Guinea-Bissau.

Symbolism and history(r1)

Ten yellow five-pointed stars in a circle represent the ten islands and their unity, set on a blue field crossed by white-red-white bands, adopted in 1992 when Cabo Verde abandoned the earlier pan-African design that had been confused with Guinea-Bissau's.
