Symbolism and history
The pan-Arab red-white-black tricolor bears the Takbir, "Allahu Akbar", written in green Kufic script across the white band, a phrase Saddam Hussein added in his own handwriting in 1991. It was rendered in neutral Kufic script in 2004, and a 2008 law removed three stars that had accompanied it and corrected the script's spelling.
