A plain blue-yellow-red vertical tricolor; during the December 1989 revolution that overthrew Nicolae Ceaușescu, protesters waved flags with the Communist coat of arms cut from the center - "the flag with the hole" - and the emblem-free tricolor was adopted in 1989.
