What the law specifies[1]

Article 7 of the Constitution names the flag as the tricolour of green, white and orange. That is the entire constitutional provision: one sentence, no order of bands, no ratio, no meaning, and no date.

Symbolism and history

A plain green-white-orange vertical tricolor, first flown in 1848 as a gesture of peace between Ireland's two main traditions, adopted formally at independence in 1922.
