The current design began use before the oath of December 20, 1903; officially adopted by ley 48 de 1925. Blue represents the Conservative Party [and] the purity and honesty of the life of the country; red represents the Liberal Party [and] the authority and law; white [is] peace and purity. The blue star [is] purity and honesty, the red star authority and law, and together the stars stand for the new republic. María de la Ossa de Amador, the first First Lady, made the original flag on November 1, 1903.

Four quarters of red, blue and white, with a blue star (purity and honesty) and a red star (authority and law) that together stand for the new republic, made in 1903 by María de la Ossa de Amador, the first First Lady, combining the colours of the two rival political parties.
