Green stands for life, land, grass, prosperity, and peace; the crescent moon symbolizes the clear sky; the five stars represent the five provinces of Turkmenistan; the five carpet guls represent the five major tribes of Turkmenistan. Olive branches [were] added in 1997 to commemorate the principles of neutrality.

Symbolism and history(r1)

A vertical band of five carpet guls (medallion patterns) for the five major Turkmen tribes runs along the hoist of a green field bearing a white crescent, for the clear sky, and five stars for the country's five provinces; olive branches were added in 1997 to mark Turkmenistan's neutrality.
