A golden frigatebird, symbolising command over the sea, freedom and dance patterns, flies above a rising golden sun over a red field, with wavy blue-and-white bands below for the Pacific Ocean; adopted at independence in 1979 and derived from a badge designed by Sir Arthur Grimble in 1931.
