Eleven red-and-white stripes and a blue canton with a single white star closely resemble the flag of the United States, reflecting Liberia's founding by free people of color and formerly enslaved people from the United States; the eleven stripes represent the signatories of the Liberian Declaration of Independence, and the star the first independent republic in Africa.
